Breathing plays a unique role in life. We can survive weeks without food, a few days without water, but only minutes without breathing. In fact, we breathe up to 25,000 times a day – from birth to death. Our breath influences our mental, physical, and emotional state. In cases of stress, sleep disturbances, lack of concentration, fatigue, or pain, breathing is often the key to improvement.
Conversely, stress can also trigger unhealthy breathing patterns: stress hormones are released, we tense up, and our breath becomes shallow – ready for fight or flight!
Today, this state is triggered too often by numerous stress factors and many of us find themselves in a permanent state of low-level stress, accompanied by dysfunctional breathing (which in return fires more stress-signals to the brain).
Although our health awareness has increased, and we pay attention to our diet, exercise, and sleep, knowledge about breathing techniques is rarely widespread in our industrialized world. Yet, without proper breathing, we will never achieve the desired state of health.
No matter what you eat, how much you exercise, how skinny or young or wise you are, none of it matters if you’re not breathing properly.
